Xcalak is a very small, very remote fishing village on the Caribbean coast in the southernmost part of Quintana Roo. Our casita is on the beach just over 11 KM from the village. The house is quite small but comfortable for a friendly couple.
Electricity is provided by solar panels and batteries, water is collected during the rainy season in a cistern under the house, and there is no regular or mail service. We do have a reliable Internet connection that supports VOIP . Grocery trucks come up the beach road several times a week and provide basic foodstuffs like fruits and vegetables. There are rudimentary grocery stores in Xcalak, slightly more amenities in Mahahual (60 KM to the north), but the closest “real” grocery store is 250 KM away in Chetumal.
Some mechanical ability is essential, and off grid experience is preferred. Keep the house clean and safe, enjoy the solitude, swim and snorkel along the gorgeous barrier reef, take advantage of one of the best fly fishing areas around, check out the extensive bird population, and nap in the hammocks under the beach palapa. Kayaks and bicycles are provided.
Remember, however, that you will be in the tropics during the summer. Although there is a fairly consistent breeze from the sea, it will be hot and humid.
