We are offering an opportunity to go back in time and live for awhile in our lovely 1860 home in Historic New Castle, DE. This compact little town on the Delware River dates back to the early 1600's and oozes charm. Both Peter Stuyvesant and William Penn first stepped ashore at our waterfront. It boasts the 63 acre Battery Park with a 1.8 mile paved pedestrian/biking trail, bordering the river. Here we sometimes see commercial ships making their way to and from Wilmington and Philadelphia. The Jack A. Markell trail is 5.5 miles long and connects Historic New Castle with the riverfront in Wilmington. The town is thoroughly walkable. Everything is within 2-3 blocks. Walk along brick sidewalks to 4-5 restaurants, antique shops, library, PO, bank and more. The historical society is active and oversees several historic buildings and gardens in town, open to the public. Throughout the year there are lots of events. Tall ship, Kalmar Nyckel, docks at our pier several times during the year.

Our antique home is semi-attached with an alley leading to our fenced backyard with a brick patio and grassy yard with several large flower beds packied with perennials, flowering trees and bushes. Throughout the growing season, there is always something in bloom. We have a front porch, which is a wonderful spot for coffee or evening libation. You will meet our friendly neighbors walking by. Despite the closeness of homes, it is a surprisingly quiet spot. Inside we have 2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, plus all the expected living spaces. The river, with a second park, Bull Hill, where the original Dutch Fort Casmir once stood, is a short block away. Adjacent to this is another lovely walk, across marshland into the woods.

The greater Wilmington area has innumerable historic homes and gardens open to the public. For most we owe thanks to the generosity of the DuPont family. Longwood Gardens (Pierre DuPont estate) blows us away every visit and it is a must-see. People come from far and wide to see the incomparable Christmas light show. Nemours, Winterthur, Hagley are wonderful Dupont homes also open to the public. The Delaware Art Museum has a surprisingly lovely collection and often has a worthwhile special exhibit. We are not far from Amish country. The countryside in the Brandywine Valley is exquisite. Shopping for grocieries, etc. is convenient. Philadelphia museums and airport are a 40-60 minute drive. The Amtrak station is 6 miles away on the edge of Wilmingtom.
